Chapter Five

I CRIED in bed for what seemed like hours, sorry that Nolan wouldn’t be reunited with Giorgio and berating myself for sabotaging my relationship with Jamison and losing someone who might be the best thing that had ever happened to me. The doorbell rang. I assumed it was a package of novels I had ordered online. The timing was perfect, since it seemed like I would be spending my upcoming nights home alone in my bedroom. I glanced at the clock on my night table, surprised to see only one hour had gone by since Jamison and I had our fight.

As I crawled out of bed, I glanced at my reflection in the mirror over the bureau. I was quite the sight, with bloodshot eyes, tearstained cheeks, and a ruby nose. Hoping the delivery person had left the box of books in front of my door and driven off, I made my way down the spiral stairs and through the hallway. After opening the door, I gasped at the image of Jamison shuffling from foot to foot. As I stepped backward in shock, he brushed past me and shut the door behind us. “You shouldn’t have asked me to leave.”

“I agree.”

“And you shouldn’t have spoken to me that way.”

“You’re right.”

He rubbed his neck. “You’re making this too easy for me.”

“Because I behaved like an idiot.”

“Yeah, you did. But I was an idiot for leaving and not insisting we work through this.”

“Can we work through it now?” I asked.

“I’m willing to try if you are.”

I nodded in relief. “Where do we start?”

“How’s this?” He took me in his arms for a sweet kiss.

“That works. Let’s continue figuring things out.” I leaned in for a deeper, more passionate kiss. Then I asked, “Are we done here?”

He shook his head. “We’re just beginning.”

After another embrace, I said, “Jamison, I’m sorry I overreacted.”

“I understand. You care about Nolan. That’s admirable.”

“But I don’t need to push you away to help Nolan.”

“There’s sexual tension between us, and it’s making both of us feel frustrated.”

I smiled. “What are we going to do about that?”

He returned the smile. “I have just the remedy for it.” He leaned in for another kiss.

I pulled away. “After the way I treated you, why do you—?”

“I see your heart, Theo Stratis. It’s beautiful, open, and loving. Do you know what else I see?”

I shook my head.

“My heart, right next to yours.” Jamison led me up the stairs and stopped next to my bed. “I want to be with you, Theo. And I won’t let Nolan, Giorgio, or anyone stand in our way.”

“I feel the same way.”

He held my face in his hands, as if it were a rare diamond. Then he covered my mouth with his. Our tongues slid over, under, and around each other. I reached for his broad back, realizing Jamison is my rock, the one who keeps me grounded. As if inmates released from our private prisons, we kissed like we had been starved for a lover’s touch.

“You’re what I’ve been looking for all these years.
